The ancient art of hair removal used by Queen Cleopatra herself: sugaring. You might’ve heard about sugaring as an all-natural, eco-friendly alternative to hair removal, but did you know this method has roots as far back as 1900 B.C from the women of Ancient Egypt and Greece?
This three ingredient technique is so natural that you can eat it! All it requires is sugar, water, lemon, and a quick finesse of the hand. The benefits of sugaring are similar to that of waxing, as both methods lift the hair from the root enabling you to stay hair-free longer than traditional shaving. However, with sugaring, you’ll find that this method for hair removal is more gentle on the skin, sanitary, and efficient for removing shorter hairs.
Follow along as we explore the sugaring technique, benefits, and pre- and post-maintenance for your next sugaring appointment!
The Art of Sugaring
Sugaring is a natural paste made of just sugar, water, and lemon. This makes it an ideal alternative to waxing for those who prefer a more natural, non-comedogenic, and hypoallergenic approach to skincare. The paste cannot harbor live bacteria, nor do we double dip back into jars. One gloved dip into the sugar paste from our skilled estheticians is enough to sugar your whole body quickly and efficiently.
The sugaring method is more gentle on the skin when applied and follows the hair follicle towards its natural state of growth when removed . With this, sugaring generally tends to hurt less as layers of the skin remain intact and the chances of developing pesky ingrown hairs is less likely.
Because the sugar paste is able to mold to the skin of each individual's unique shape and structure, sugaring can be done with only four to seven days of growth, or 1/16th of an inch. For those who are first time sugarers, it’s best to wait 10 days after shaving to get the best results of your sugaring.
At Cleo, we specialize in sugaring from head to toe. We offer a comprehensive list of services ranging from brow shaping to full back sugaring. Check out our menu HERE!
Pre-Sugaring
A few things to note here before your sugaring is to make sure your hair is long enough and to refrain from workout sessions before to experience better results.
In general terms, hair can removed about six to seven days after shaving. 10-14 days are preferred if you’ve never sugared. Don’t worry too much about shaving before, as our estheticians will assess the length and needs of the service upon your arrival!
Hold off on your hot yoga sessions at least four hours before your appointment! We want to make sure your skin is cool, clean, dry, and free of any oils or lotions before you come in for your sugaring.
Lastly, relax– you’re in good hands! Avoid caffeine and other anxiety inducing activites before your appointment. Try having a cup of chamomile tea and a gentle yoga class before to help calm the nervous system before.
We have a wonderful team of experts that will gently help guide you through your appointment to make sure you’re comfortable and calm for the duration of your sugaring.
Post-Sugaring
Now that you’re all sugared and feeling great, here are a few tips for you to care for your beautifully sugared skin.
Keep things simple– Try not to touch the sugared area too much as this might cause some irritation. Your hair follicle will be more susceptible to bacteria during the first 24-hours, so hands off! Avoid using anything that has chemicals or additives, as well as anything abrasive.
As tempting as it might be to jump in the ocean or run to your pilates appointment, we recommend keeping the area clean and dry for at least 48 hours. These moisture ridden environments can be a breeding ground for bacteria.
